Pallet rack FAQ

We answer frequently asked questions about pallet racks.

Are the pallet racks also suitable for outdoor use?

No, outdoor installation is not recommended. Wind and snow can compromise the structural integrity, and there are no safety precautions in place in the event of a lightning strike. Due to their design, components of the racks, such as crossbars and base plates, cannot be hot-dip galvanised, meaning that rust formation is to be expected when the pallet racking is used outdoors.

Can the pallet rack also be used in cold storage?

Yes, the racks are suitable for cold storage. However, slight rust formation cannot be ruled out.

Can the crossbars also be positioned asymmetrically or differently?

The individual crossbars can be mounted at different heights. An offset of up to 100 mm is no problem. However, there are restrictions for larger offsets in order not to compromise the stability of the shelf, and these must be checked individually by an expert.

Are customised storage solutions possible?

We are happy to assist you in planning your projects, whether for individual shelving or large-scale planning. Our consulting services begin with a concrete assessment of your needs, continue with the creation of detailed planning documents, and end with the timely implementation of your project. Our consulting and planning team has been appropriately tested and certified for these tasks, enabling us to offer you qualified shelving advice.

Can I also store goods without pallets on pallet racks?

Yes, non-palletised goods can also be stored on pallet racks. This requires accessories such as mesh shelves, chipboard or depth supports to prevent goods from falling through the crossbars.

How do I choose the right size for my pallet rack?

Choosing the right size and load capacity is a key decision factor.

  • The height depends on the ceiling height and the maximum lift height of your industrial trucks; 2.5 m to 7.5 m are common, and up to 15 m in high-bay warehouses.
  • The depth usually depends on the aisle width, with 1000 mm being standard for Euro pallets.
  • The length of the rack is determined by the space available and the desired storage capacity and can be extended almost indefinitely.
  • When it comes to the shelves, it is important to ensure that the top level is accessible to your employees. Depending on the rack model, two to four storage spaces are possible per level and field.

How long does it take to assemble a pallet rack?

Assembling and securing a small rack takes a few hours, while a large rack warehouse takes several days. You can find the estimated assembly time by an experienced assembly team under ‘Material list’ for your rack configuration. You can book assembly by our team.

How is the rack anchored to the floor?

The rack uprights are securely mounted using cross and diagonal braces and the appropriate assembly materials. Suitable dowels are included as standard for secure anchoring to the floor. Detailed instructions on how to assemble the rack uprights correctly can be found in the assembly instructions.

How long is the estimated delivery time after placing an order?

Normally 14 days. For large projects, more complex configurations and short-term bottlenecks, there may be a delay of a few days.

How are the ordered pallet racks delivered?

The racks are delivered to you by lorry (40-tonne articulated lorry) as standard. For delivery, it is important that the delivery address can also be accessed by lorry. A forklift is required for unloading.

Are 3,600 mm long crossbars also available for storing EPAL5 Euro pallets?

Yes, but this requires separate planning. Other special dimensions are also possible. Please contact us directly.

What does bay load mean and what is shelf load?

Shelf load refers to the maximum load that can be distributed across a single shelf, while bay load refers to the maximum total load for a rack bay (the distance between two rack uprights). Both values are crucial for the safe use of the pallet rack. The data on the type plate must not be exceeded.

Which pallet rack is right for me?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Important factors to consider when planning your purchase include the length, height and depth of the rack, the dimensions and weight of the stored goods (Euro pallets, industrial pallets or non-palletised goods) and the desired number of levels.

How much does a pallet rack cost?

Pallet racks from Nedcon are available from Pallit starting at around £450. The dimensions are 1.8 metres in length and 2.5 metres in height with 2 levels. The racks can be extended to a maximum height of 7.5 metres and a maximum length of 55.7 metres.

Where are Nedcon pallet racks manufactured?

Nedcon pallet racking systems are manufactured in the European Union and meet the highest quality standards. Our pallet racks are ideal for use with Euro pallets or mesh boxes. We would also be happy to configure a customised rack for you, according to your specific requirements.

What are the advantages of pallet racks?

Pallet racks offer the decisive advantage that each individual pallet is directly accessible. They make good use of the available space height and can be easily expanded at a later date. Thanks to shelves, flexible crosswise and lengthwise storage is also possible. However, the use of pallet racks requires transport vehicles such as forklifts or high-lift trucks, and the goods to be stored must be palletised. In addition, high safety requirements must be observed to ensure safe operation.

What do I need to consider when choosing a pallet rack?

When purchasing a pallet rack, you should use the following seven questions as a checklist:

  1. Does the desired pallet rack make optimum use of the available space?
  2. Can the room height be fully utilised with the pallet rack?
  3. How much space must be left in the aisles for employees and transport vehicles?
  4. Does the warehouse need to be prepared for automation?
  5. Do I need a rack with roller conveyors?
  6. Will hazardous materials also be stored in the warehouse rack?
  7. Is the rack available in the required dimensions?

Should I buy a new or used pallet rack?

For businesses, buying new is usually the best choice. This gives you full control over the equipment and allows you to have the shelving custom-made for your storage space. Buying new is particularly advantageous for long-term investments, as maintenance costs are lower.

Buying used equipment may be cheaper, but it requires compromises as the selection is limited and custom designs are not possible. In addition, higher maintenance costs or the purchase of new batteries may be incurred.

Renting is particularly suitable for bridging short periods and bottlenecks, as it is the most expensive form of acquisition.

Which material should I choose for my pallet rack?

The choice of material has a major impact on stability and durability. Steel is robust and durable, while stainless steel also offers high corrosion resistance and is therefore well suited to damp environments. Painted racks are designed for indoor use; the paint serves as an additional protective layer and allows for colour customisation.

What do I need to consider in terms of assembly and safety?

Safe use begins with correct assembly on a solid surface. It is important to note that the maximum load only applies when the load is evenly distributed. Each rack upright should be secured to the floor with two screw connections. Levels without a floor are only suitable for palletised goods. Wide aisle warehouses are simple and inexpensive to implement and offer good accessibility, while narrow aisle warehouses allow for higher storage density but are more technically complex and expensive. Anchoring to the floor is required for all high-bay racking. Important safety considerations include correct labelling of the racks, compliance with the minimum distance of 200 mm and an annual inspection by a qualified person in accordance with DIN EN 15635.

What protective measures are advisable?

Standard accessories include shelves made of wood, chipboard or mesh grating, which enable the storage of non-palletised goods. A mesh rear panel or push-through protection prevents pallets from accidentally being pushed through the rack. Impact protection elements protect the rack from damage caused by transport vehicles. Additional crossbars or beams can be added later to increase storage capacity. Rack labelling is essential for optimal organisation.

components at a glance

What components do the pallet racks consist of?

Stable shelf frames

The blue frames of the pallet rack (also called pallet rack stands or support frames) form the basic structure of your new rack. They are made of cold-rolled steel with precise perforation. They vary in height and depth depending on your chosen configuration. Each frame consists of a front and a rear element that are bolted together by cross and diagonal struts. The supports can be easily hooked in. The surface of the pallet rack frames is powder-coated. A hot-dip galvanized version for use on outdoor surfaces is also available on request.

Secure ground anchoring

The frames are firmly anchored in the ground with base plates and bolt anchors made of steel. They ensure an exact distribution of the point load - maximum stability for your pallet rack!

Robust straps

The orange supports (also known as crossbeams or supporting beams) are hung horizontally in the frames. They are simply inserted and secured with locking pins - this means that your rack can be quickly reconstructed later if necessary. The height, width and length of the supports vary depending on the configuration of your desired pallet rack. Thanks to their tubular shape, they are highly torsion-resistant and offer extreme strength and rigidity in both vertical and horizontal areas.

Shelf supports to choose from:

  • Chipboard for storing dry goods, such as boxes. The load capacity per m² is up to 150 kg.
  • Hot-dip galvanized grid flooring is protected against corrosion and permeable to light, air and water. Due to its higher load capacity, the grid is suitable for heavy goods and also for storing liquids and hazardous goods, for example. The load capacity per insert is up to 1000 kg.
  • A depth support enables the transverse storage of Euro pallets or smaller pallets
  • A hot-dip galvanized wire mesh as protection against falling objects or for storing very light goods. The load capacity per pallet is up to 750 kg. The mesh width is 40 mm.
  • A lattice box support for the safe storage of Euro lattice boxes using guide rails
  • No shelf support for storing pallets directly on the beams

push-through protection

A push-through protection prevents a pallet from falling backwards - and is therefore very important for the safety of the pallet rack. It is attached to the side of the rack that is not used for loading and unloading. They are required by law for pallet racks that are placed in parallel.

collision protection

Collision protection is used to prevent damage to the shelf support. According to DIN EN 15365 and DGUV 108-007, the corner areas must be equipped with collision protection when forklifts are used. If forklifts and electric high lift trucks are used, our collision protection package M or L is required, which is anchored in the floor. Do you only use hand-operated high lift trucks in your warehouse? Choose our small collision protection package S for shelf warehouses with little goods turnover. This shelf protection is screwed to the shelf.

side protection

Side protection (also flank protection or crash barriers) protects your shelving system from damage to the outer shelf supports caused by accidental collisions with forklifts, pallet trucks, etc. In addition, the yellow paintwork with black signal stripes ensures increased employee attention. One-sided flank protection is required if your pallet rack is to be free-standing on one side (i.e. attached to a wall on the other end). If your rack is to be free-standing on both sides, two-sided side protection is required by law.
